Study shows that only a third of US employees feel a sense of engagement with their employer
- International study by The Stepstone Group analyzes employee sentiment in US, UK, and Germany
- Four in ten employees in US and UK think about changing jobs several times per month
- Sebastian Dettmers, CEO of The Stepstone Group: “Processes to match companies and jobs with candidates need to be improved right from the recruitment stage. In the future, artificial intelligence will open up completely new possibilities in this respect.”
Düsseldorf, April 27, 2023 Too many people all over the world are stuck in a job that is not right for them. This is the finding of an employee engagement study conducted by digital recruitment platform The Stepstone Group. More than 6,000 employees in the US, the UK, and Germany were surveyed for this study. In the US, four in ten employees think about changing jobs several times per month, and only one in three employees feels positively engaged with their current employer. Clearly, the connection between employees and employers in the US is weak, and yet it is the strongest among all the countries included in the study (UK: 20 percent, Germany: 23 percent).
“We are facing a mammoth task on a global scale as the labor force continues to shrink. In this environment of people shortages, every single working person counts when it comes to keeping productivity up and securing economic growth. Ensuring that employees feel motivated and engaged in their work is becoming ever more important for companies, because it has been proven that this boosts success,” says Sebastian Dettmers, CEO of The Stepstone Group. “Companies need to make every effort to recruit the right employees and utilize their staff in the best possible way.”
Employees are stuck and demotivated
When it come to the engagement that people in the US feel they have with their employer, there is ample room for improvement. Just 43 percent would stay with their current employer if they were offered the same job at a different company. In the UK, the same is true for only a little over a quarter of employees. “When the bulk of employees are stuck in demotivating jobs, valuable potential is wasted. In a labor market where competition for talent is as fierce as it is at the moment, we need to do better. Demand for employees is already outstripping supply significantly, with the number of vacancies about 40 percent above 2019 levels,” says Andrew Flowers, a labor economist for the US job market at Appcast, a company of The Stepstone Group. “Even if the US can maintain its current success in recruiting skilled workers from abroad, this will not be enough to fill the gaps. We need to rapidly leverage all sources of potential. It is also important to ensure that employees can continue to quickly and easily change jobs, both within an organization and between companies. The Great Resignation must not be followed by The Great Labor Hoarding.”
People and businesses need to match in order to be successful
In all three surveyed countries, a clear majority of the employees who feel positively engaged with their place of work think that their day-to-day tasks fit their skills, personality, and experience (Germany: 60 percent, UK: 55 percent, US: 64 percent). “People flourish in their job if they can use their strengths and expertise to create added value. This becomes all the more important at a time of people shortages,” says Dettmers. “Right from the recruitment stage, we need to know precisely which skills candidates can offer and which roles best match their skill set. That is exactly what we do at The Stepstone Group. We use artificial intelligence to analyze millions of résumés and predict which jobs might be a great fit.”
About the survey
In March 2023, The Stepstone Group surveyed around 6,000 people in the USA, Germany and the UK about their engagement with their employer, including around 2,000 candidates from each country. The aim of the study was to investigate how enthusiastic they are about their job, how much they identify with their employers and what influence this.
