Beschreibung
The Bank of Greece serves as the central banking institution for Greece, actively participating in the Eurosystem to shape and implement monetary policy across the eurozone. It ensures financial stability by providing liquidity to domestic credit institutions and managing their deposits. The institution holds comprehensive supervisory authority over various financial entities, including credit and insurance firms, reinsurance companies, insurance distributors, and even those undergoing liquidation, while also functioning as the national resolution authority for these sectors. Its mandate includes maintaining critical infrastructure for payment and securities settlement, alongside overseeing diverse payment and clearing systems. The bank actively collaborates with different participants in financial markets, operates an electronic secondary securities market, and is responsible for issuing foreign exchange rates, complete with an archived history. Beyond these functions, the Bank of Greece engages in the sale and purchase of gold, including sovereigns, bars, coins, and ingots, and publishes daily gold price bulletins. It is the official issuer of banknotes and coins for the nation. A key provider of economic data, the bank collects, compiles, and disseminates detailed statistics on monetary and credit trends, balance of payments, international investment position, national financial accounts, and granular loan-by-loan credit information. It continuously monitors and assesses financial system developments, implementing measures to reduce systemic risk accumulation and enhance the overall resilience of the financial sector. The Bank of Greece also operates printing facilities, producing euro banknotes and coins, commemorative issues, Greek State securities, and other secure documents. It acts as both the treasurer and fiscal agent for the Greek government, processing domestic and international payment orders, managing collective investment portfolios for social security organizations and other legal entities, and offering essential custody and depository services to the state. Founded in 1927, the bank is headquartered in Athens, Greece, and conducts its wide-ranging activities through a network comprising 15 branches, 32 agencies, and 4 outlets.
